Where couples should stay

$$$ · Best for couples, shopping, nightlife and luxury

Chiaia

Chiaia is Naples's polished side, with fashion boutiques on Via dei Mille and Via Calabritto, the long Villa Comunale park along the seafront and a cluster of small bars, the baretti, around Vico Belledonne a Chiaia. It is calmer than the centre, with a funicular up to Vomero and an easy walk to the Lungomare.

Good
Calmer, well-kept streets; Good restaurants and bars; Near the seafront
Watch out
A 20-minute walk to the historic centre; Pricier than the old town
Nearby
Villa Comunale, Lungomare, Piazza dei Martiri, Chiaia funicular

Romantic day trips

  • Capri (About 45–50 minutes by fast ferry) — The island's limestone cliffs, the Faraglioni rocks, the Piazzetta, the gardens of Augustus and boat trips around the coast make a classic day out.
  • Amalfi Coast (About 1.5–2.5 hours by bus or ferry) — Cliffside towns such as Positano, Amalfi and Ravello hang above the sea along one of Europe's most famous coastal roads.
  • Sorrento (About 40 minutes by ferry or 1 hour by train) — A clifftop resort town of lemon groves, limoncello shops and views back across the bay to Vesuvius, and a gateway to the Amalfi Coast and Capri.
  • Procida (About 40 minutes by fast ferry) — The smallest island in the bay has pastel-painted fishing harbours such as Marina Corricella, quiet lanes and small beaches; it was Italian Capital of Culture in 2022.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Neapolitan pizza, Spaghetti with clams and Ragù and Genovese. Ask for the house wine or a local Falanghina or Aglianico, which are inexpensive and good.
