Kalsa

The Kalsa, the old Arab-era quarter by the sea, mixes restored palazzi such as Palazzo Abatellis, open squares like Piazza Magione and the seafront Foro Italico park. Once neglected, it is now one of the liveliest areas for evening drinks around Via Alloro and Piazza Rivoluzione, with La Cala, the old harbour, just to the north.

Good
Atmospheric streets and sea air; Lively bar scene; Walkable to the main sights
Watch out
Some streets still feel neglected; Noise on weekend nights
Nearby
Palazzo Abatellis, Piazza Magione, Foro Italico, La Cala

Romantic day trips

  • Cefalù (About 1 hour by train) — A seaside town below a huge limestone crag, Cefalù has a Norman cathedral with a golden Christ Pantocrator mosaic, part of the same UNESCO listing as Palermo, a medieval washhouse fed by a spring and a sandy town beach.
  • Erice (About 1.5–2 hours by car, or bus and cable car) — A medieval hilltop town about 750 metres above Trapani, with cobbled lanes, Norman castle walls and almond pastries made from old convent recipes; views stretch over the salt pans to the Egadi Islands.
  • Scopello and the Zingaro reserve (About 1–1.5 hours by car) — Scopello's old tuna fishery and sea stacks lie at the southern entrance to the Zingaro Nature Reserve, Sicily's first, where a coastal path of about 7 km links coves of clear water reachable only on foot or by boat.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Pasta con le sarde, Anelletti al forno and Caponata. In Palermo it is 'arancina'; in eastern Sicily the same snack is called 'arancino'.
