Beach · Sant Antoni

1.Cala Bassa

A sheltered sandy bay ringed by juniper and pine trees on the west coast, with calm, shallow, turquoise water and a beach club. Boats run from Sant Antoni harbour throughout the summer.

Bring water shoes for the rocky edges and come by boat from Sant Antoni to avoid parking queues.

2.Cova de Can Marçà

A cave above Port de Sant Miquel on the north coast, once used by smugglers, with stalactites, stalagmites and a sound-and-light show that ends with an artificial waterfall. The terrace outside looks over the cliffs and sea.

3.Dalt Vila

Ibiza's walled old town crowns the hill above the harbour, enclosed by 16th-century Renaissance fortifications with seven bastions. Enter through the Portal de ses Taules, flanked by Roman statues, and climb the cobbled lanes past whitewashed houses and small squares to the cathedral at the top, with views over the port, Formentera and the salt flats.

Walk up in the morning or at sunset to avoid the midday heat, and follow the walls around the bastions for the best views.

Nature · South coast

4.Ses Salines Natural Park

The southern tip of Ibiza is a protected landscape of salt pans, dunes, pine woods and two of the island's best beaches, Ses Salines and Es Cavallet. Salt is still harvested here, and flamingos and other wading birds visit the pans, especially outside summer.

Walk the path between Ses Salines and Es Cavallet beaches, and look for birds on the salt pans near the road.

Above Santa Eulària's seafront, the hill of Puig de Missa is crowned by a 16th-century fortified church with a wide arched porch, built to shelter villagers from pirate raids. Below it, the town has a palm-lined promenade, marina and family beach.

Walk up to Puig de Missa in the late afternoon for views, then down to the promenade for dinner.

Santa Eulària des Riu

Ibiza's third town has a palm-lined promenade, a marina and a sandy town beach, with the fortified church of Puig de Missa on the hill above. It is the island's most family-friendly and relaxed base, with good restaurants, buses to Ibiza Town in about 20–30 minutes and the Las Dalias and Punta Arabí markets nearby.

Good
Calm and family-friendly; Promenade and town beach; Close to the hippy markets
Watch out
Little nightlife; Bus or car needed for the west-coast coves
Nearby
Puig de Missa, Santa Eulària beach, Punta Arabí market, Las Dalias market

Family travel tips

  • Stay on the east coast or in the north, away from Sant Antoni's West End and Platja d'en Bossa's club scene.
  • Cala Bassa, Talamanca and Cala Llonga have shallow water suited to young children.
  • A hire car with child seats makes beach-hopping much easier; book early for summer.
  • Protect children from the strong midday sun; many beaches have little natural shade.
  • Boat trips from Santa Eulària to nearby coves are an easy family outing.

Day trips for families

  • Formentera (About 30 minutes by fast ferry) — The smallest inhabited Balearic island has long white-sand beaches such as Ses Illetes and Llevant, inside the Ses Salines Natural Park, with turquoise water over Posidonia meadows.
  • Portinatx and the north coast (About 35 minutes by car) — The green, hilly north has small coves with shallow water at Portinatx, the quiet bay of Cala Xarraca and the village of Sant Joan de Labritja, known for its Sunday market and whitewashed church.

When to go with children

The best months overall are May–June and September. July–August are the busiest, so book the big sights early. Weather by month.
