Old Town and New Town

The Stare Miasto and the adjoining Nowe Miasto were rebuilt after 1945 to look as they did in the 17th and 18th centuries. Hotels and apartments here put you beside the Royal Castle, the Market Square and the start of the Royal Route, with the Vistula boulevards just below. Ratusz Arsenał metro station is a short walk west.

Good
Most atmospheric area at night; Walk to the Royal Route; Riverside nearby
Watch out
Restaurants on the square are touristy and pricey; Cobbles and few direct transport links
Nearby
Old Town Market Square, Royal Castle, Warsaw Barbican, Vistula boulevards

Romantic day trips

  • Żelazowa Wola (About 1 hour by car or bus) — The manor house where Fryderyk Chopin was born in 1810 is now a museum surrounded by a landscaped park along the Utrata river.
  • Kazimierz Dolny (About 2–2.5 hours by car or bus) — A small Renaissance town on the Vistula with a market square of ornate merchants' houses, castle ruins, loess ravines to walk through and a long tradition as an artists' retreat.
  • Toruń (About 2.5–3 hours by train) — Copernicus's birthplace is a UNESCO-listed Gothic brick town on the Vistula, famous for its gingerbread, which you can learn to bake at a gingerbread museum.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Pierogi, Żurek and Kotlet schabowy. Book weekend dinners at popular restaurants and food-hall tables in Powiśle and Śródmieście.
