Warsaw neighbourhoods in detail
$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples and culture
Old Town and New Town
The Stare Miasto and the adjoining Nowe Miasto were rebuilt after 1945 to look as they did in the 17th and 18th centuries. Hotels and apartments here put you beside the Royal Castle, the Market Square and the start of the Royal Route, with the Vistula boulevards just below. Ratusz Arsenał metro station is a short walk west.
- Good
- Most atmospheric area at night; Walk to the Royal Route; Riverside nearby
- Watch out
- Restaurants on the square are touristy and pricey; Cobbles and few direct transport links
- Nearby
- Old Town Market Square, Royal Castle, Warsaw Barbican, Vistula boulevards
$$$ · Best for first-timers, shopping, budget and nightlife
Śródmieście
The central district around the Palace of Culture and Science holds Warszawa Centralna station, the Złote Tarasy mall and both metro lines, which cross at Świętokrzyska. Chain and business hotels are plentiful, and Nowy Świat, Chmielna and the Hala Koszyki food hall are within walking distance.
- Good
- Best transport connections; Wide choice of hotels; Plenty of restaurants and bars
- Watch out
- Busy roads and traffic noise; Little historic character
- Nearby

Powiśle
Between the Royal Route and the Vistula, Powiśle has the University Library roof garden, the Copernicus Science Centre, the Chopin Museum and the riverside boulevards, plus a busy café and bar scene around Warszawa Powiśle station and the Elektrownia Powiśle food hall in a former power plant.
- Good
- River and science centre on the doorstep; Good food and bars; Walk to the Royal Route

$$ · Best for budget, nightlife, solo travellers and culture
Praga
Praga escaped the worst wartime destruction, so streets such as Ząbkowska keep original pre-war tenements with courtyard shrines. The restored Koneser vodka factory now holds the Polish Vodka Museum, restaurants and a hotel, and the Neon Museum, Warsaw Zoo and Bazar Różyckiego are nearby. Metro line M2 crosses the river to the centre in a few minutes.

- Koneser Centre, Neon Museum, Warsaw Zoo, Ząbkowska Street
$$ · Best for quiet stays and families
Mokotów
Mokotów stretches south from Łazienki Park, with tree-lined streets, the Pole Mokotowskie park and neighbourhood cafés and restaurants. Metro line M1 links it to the centre in about 10 minutes, and Wilanów is a short bus ride further south.
- Good
- Green and calm; Close to Łazienki and Wilanów; Local restaurants
- Watch out
- Mostly apartments rather than hotels; Metro ride to the Old Town
- Nearby
- Łazienki Park, Pole Mokotowskie, Wilanów Palace
$$ · Best for quiet stays and solo travellers
Żoliborz
Built largely in the 1920s and 1930s, Żoliborz has villa quarters, early modernist housing estates and Plac Wilsona, a metro stop with cafés around it. The Warsaw Citadel and its museums are on its southern edge. It suits travellers who want a quiet, residential base on the M1 metro line.

- Watch out
- Few hotels; Quiet in the evenings
- Nearby
- Plac Wilsona, Warsaw Citadel, New Town
$$$ · Best for budget and culture
Wola
West of the centre, Wola has become Warsaw's skyscraper district, with large business hotels that often discount at weekends. The Warsaw Rising Museum is here, as is the Mirowska market hall, and metro line M2 runs through it to the centre in a few minutes.
- Good
- Modern hotels with weekend deals; Next to the Warsaw Rising Museum; Metro access
- Watch out
- Office-district feel; Few traditional sights
- Nearby
- Warsaw Rising Museum, Hala Mirowska, Rondo Daszyńskiego
