Quick answer

Budapest's romance lies in its lights and water: the floodlit Parliament reflected in the Danube, a late soak beneath an Ottoman dome and dinner on a terrace above the river. Evenings are long in summer and atmospheric in winter. Couples tend to stay in Belváros and Lipótváros (District V).

Romantic ideas

1.Evening Danube cruise

A one-hour cruise after dark passes the floodlit Parliament, Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge from the water.

2.Sunrise at Fisherman's Bastion

The white terraces are empty at dawn, and the Parliament glows across the river as the sun comes up.

Soak under the Ottoman dome or in the rooftop pool facing the Danube during the late-night weekend sessions.

4.A night at the Opera

See an opera or ballet in the restored gilded auditorium on Andrássy Avenue.

Where couples should stay

$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, shopping and families

Belváros and Lipótváros (District V)

District V is Pest's historic and political core: the Parliament and the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial in the north, St Stephen's Basilica and the Chain Bridge in the middle, and the pedestrian Váci utca running south to the Great Market Hall. Staying here puts river views and the main Pest sights on your doorstep, with three metro lines meeting at Deák Ferenc tér.

Good
Walk to the river and most Pest sights; Best metro connections; Wide choice of hotels
Watch out
Restaurants on Váci utca are overpriced; Quieter than District VII at night
Nearby
Hungarian Parliament Building, St. Stephen's Basilica, Széchenyi Chain Bridge, Váci utca

Romantic day trips

  • Visegrád and the Danube Bend (About 1 hour 15 minutes by bus) — At the Danube Bend the river turns sharply south between wooded hills.
  • Gödöllő Royal Palace (About 50 minutes by suburban train) — One of the largest baroque palaces in Hungary, the summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elisabeth (Sisi), with restored royal apartments, exhibitions about Sisi and a large landscaped park.
  • Eger (About 2 hours by train) — A baroque town known for the castle whose defenders held off an Ottoman siege in 1552, a 40-metre Ottoman minaret you can climb, thermal baths and the Valley of the Beautiful Women, a horseshoe of wine cellars pouring Egri Bikavér.
  • Lake Balaton (About 2 hours by train) — Central Europe's largest lake has shallow, warm water on its southern shore and a northern shore of vineyards, spa towns and the Tihany peninsula with its hilltop abbey.
