Quick answer

Budapest has one of Central Europe's liveliest nightlife scenes, centred on the ruin bars and cocktail bars of District VII. Drinks are reasonably priced, bars stay open late, and in summer the party moves outdoors to garden bars and the riverbanks. The main areas are Jewish Quarter (District VII), Liszt Ferenc tér and Nagymező utca, Ráday utca and A38 and the riverbanks.

Szimpla Kert, Instant-Fogas and dozens of smaller ruin bars around Kazinczy utca and Király utca, plus the bar-lined Gozsdu Udvar passage.

Liszt Ferenc tér and Nagymező utca

Café-bars and cocktail terraces on the square, next to the theatres and cabarets of the city's 'Broadway'.

Ráday utca

A restaurant street in District IX that turns into a relaxed bar strip after dinner.

A38 and the riverbanks

A38, a concert venue in a converted stone-carrier ship moored near Petőfi Bridge, plus summer garden bars along the Danube.

Nightlife tips

  • Tram 6 runs all night around the Grand Boulevard, and night buses cover the other main routes.
  • Avoid bars that strangers invite you to and check drink prices before ordering; overcharging scams target tourists.
  • Stag and hen groups crowd District VII on Friday and Saturday nights; weeknights are calmer.

What to drink

  • Pálinka — Strong fruit brandy distilled from apricots, plums, pears or cherries, offered as a welcome shot or after a heavy meal.
  • Tokaji and fröccs — Tokaji Aszú is a golden sweet wine from north-east Hungary made with noble-rot grapes, while fröccs, a spritzer of wine and soda water, is the everyday summer drink.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 16°C (61°F).

Getting home late

  • Metro — Buy tickets or passes from machines or the BudapestGO app, and validate paper tickets before going down the escalators.
  • Tram — Tram 2 runs along the Pest embankment past the Parliament with river views most of the way, while trams 4 and 6 circle the Grand Boulevard across Margaret and Petőfi bridges; tram 6 runs through the night.
  • Walking — Districts V, VI and VII are flat and walkable, and the Chain, Margaret, Elisabeth and Liberty bridges all have pavements across the Danube.
  • Bus — Bus 16 links Deák Ferenc tér with the Castle District across the Chain Bridge, buses and trolleybuses fill the gaps elsewhere, and night buses cover the main routes.
  • Taxi — Ignore unmarked cars offering rides at stations and outside bars.

Late-night bites

  • Lángos — The upper gallery of the Great Market Hall, market stalls and street-food counters, especially at weekends.
  • Túró Rudi — The fridge section of any supermarket or corner shop.

Staying safe at night

Budapest is generally safe for visitors. Pickpockets work trams 4 and 6, the metro and Váci utca, and some bars overcharge tourists, especially when strangers invite you in. Use licensed taxis or apps, and make sure menus show prices before ordering.

Where to stay for nightlife

$$ · Best for nightlife, food lovers, budget and solo travellers

Erzsébetváros (District VII)

District VII is the historic Jewish Quarter around the Dohány Street, Rumbach and Kazinczy Street synagogues, and since the early 2000s the centre of Budapest's nightlife, with Szimpla Kert and other ruin bars in crumbling courtyard buildings and the Gozsdu Udvar passage of bars. It is central and packed with restaurants, but the streets around Kazinczy utca are loud late at night.
