Quick answer

Zagreb's nightlife is relaxed and social, built around café-bars, craft-beer pubs and a few clubs, with summer festivals at Lake Jarun. Tkalčićeva and the streets around Cvjetni trg are the main evening areas. The main areas are Tkalčićeva Street, Bogovićeva and Cvjetni trg, Lake Jarun and Upper Town summer stages.

What to drink

  • Gemišt — White wine mixed with sparkling mineral water, the standard drink at Zagreb's café terraces and wine bars on warm afternoons.
  • Rakija — Fruit or herb brandy such as šljivovica (plum), travarica (herb) or medica (honey), often offered as a welcome drink or digestif.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 16°C (61°F).

Getting home late

  • Tram — Buy time-based tickets at kiosks or from the driver and validate them on board; tickets are valid for transfers within their time limit.
  • Walking — The historic centre is best explored on foot, though the climb to the Upper Town is steep; the funicular and the Grič Tunnel help.
  • Bus — ZET buses cover the outer districts, Mirogoj and Medvednica, and leave from hubs such as Kaptol and Črnomerec.
  • Ride-hailing — Ride-hailing apps operate in Zagreb alongside taxis and are commonly used for airport and late-night trips.

Late-night bites

  • Burek — Bakeries (pekare) all over the city, especially near tram stops and stations.

Staying safe at night

Zagreb is generally calm for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in crowded trams and Advent crowds, and be careful on icy cobbles in winter. Football derby nights can bring large crowds around the stadium in Maksimir.

Kaptol and Tkalčićeva

Kaptol, historically the bishop's town, is crowned by the cathedral and borders Dolac market. Below it, Tkalčićeva Street follows the course of a buried stream and is lined with café-bars, restaurants and pastel houses that fill late into the evening. It is lively and central, but can be noisy.
