Malá Strana

The Lesser Town spreads across the slope between Charles Bridge and Prague Castle, with the green dome of St Nicholas Church, palace gardens such as the Wallenstein Garden and the riverside island of Kampa. Its cobbled streets, including Nerudova, are among the most atmospheric in the city, especially early and late in the day.

Good
Beautiful and quieter in the evenings; Walk to the castle and Charles Bridge; Riverside parks
Watch out
Steep cobbled streets; Expensive hotels and restaurants
Nearby
St Nicholas Church, Kampa Island, Lennon Wall, Wallenstein Garden

Romantic day trips

  • Karlštejn Castle (About 40 minutes by train, then a 20–30 minute walk) — Charles IV built this Gothic castle in the 14th century to keep the imperial crown jewels, and it rises dramatically above a wooded valley.
  • Český Krumlov (About 3 hours by bus) — A small Renaissance town wrapped in a loop of the Vltava under a huge castle with a painted tower and a rare working baroque theatre.
  • Karlovy Vary (About 2–2.5 hours by bus) — Bohemia's grandest spa town has colonnades where visitors sip hot mineral water from spouted cups, pastel 19th-century hotels along the Teplá river and the Becherovka museum.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Svíčková, Roast pork, dumplings and sauerkraut and Czech goulash. Check the bill: some tourist restaurants add service charges or charge for items you did not order.
