Nightlife tips

  • Ride-hailing apps are the easiest way home after the buses stop.
  • Try Lithuanian farmhouse ales and craft beers rather than standard lagers.
  • Bars are busiest late on Friday and Saturday; weekday evenings are quiet.

What to drink

  • Lithuanian mead — Honey-based drink with a long history in Lithuania, ranging from light honey wines to strong mead liqueurs, sipped as a digestif.
  • Farmhouse ale — Unfiltered beers brewed with old local yeasts and methods, mostly from the north of the country around Biržai and Pasvalys. They have a distinctive fruity, sometimes earthy taste quite unlike standard lagers.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 13°C (55°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — Cathedral Square, the university, the Gate of Dawn and Užupis are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, though streets are cobbled and hilly in places.
  • Bus — Buy tickets in an official mobile ticket app or load them on a Vilniečio kortelė card before boarding.
  • Ride-hailing — Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt are widely used and inexpensive, and are the easiest option at night.

Late-night bites

  • Kibinai — Trakai's Karaim restaurants, and kibinai bakeries and cafés in Vilnius.
  • Fried rye bread — Bars and pubs throughout the city.

Staying safe at night

Vilnius is generally low-risk for visitors, but pickpocketing occurs in the busy Old Town and around the railway and bus stations. Cobbles are slippery when wet or icy, so wear sturdy shoes, especially in winter.
