Solo travel tips

  • Stay in the Old Town or Naujamiestis for hostels and good-value hotels near the stations.
  • Free walking tours leave daily from the Old Town and include Užupis.
  • Lunch menus and bar counters make eating alone inexpensive and easy.
  • Use ride-hailing apps after dark rather than walking long distances through quiet districts.
  • Trains make Trakai and Kaunas simple to visit independently.

Užupis

Across a bridge from the Old Town's eastern edge, Užupis was a run-down district until artists moved in during the 1990s and declared it an independent republic in 1997. Today its sloping streets have galleries, workshops, cafés on the Vilnia's banks, the Angel of Užupis statue and the constitution plaques on Paupio street, with a mix of guesthouses and apartments.

Good

Meeting people

  • Cepelinai lunch — Order a plate of cepelinai with spirgai and sour cream at a traditional Old Town restaurant, ideally with a glass of kvass (gira) or beer; it is the definitive Lithuanian meal.
  • Weekday lunch menus — Most restaurants offer a 'dienos pietūs' (lunch of the day), usually soup and a main course, at a fraction of dinner prices.
  • Vokiečių street — A broad Old Town street of terraces, wine bars and cocktail bars, busy on summer evenings.
  • Old Town courtyards — Craft-beer bars and pubs hidden in courtyards off Didžioji, Pilies and Totorių streets.

Sensible precautions

Vilnius is generally low-risk for visitors, but pickpocketing occurs in the busy Old Town and around the railway and bus stations. Cobbles are slippery when wet or icy, so wear sturdy shoes, especially in winter.
