Quick answer

Helsinki nights run from no-frills Kallio bars to cocktail lounges in Punavuori and summer terraces by the sea. Many bars and clubs serve until 3–4am at weekends, and live music and club nights are concentrated in a few walkable districts. The main areas are Kallio, Punavuori and Iso Roobertinkatu, Kamppi and Erottaja and Waterfront terraces.

Nightlife tips

  • Night buses replace most trams and the metro after about midnight; check routes in the HSL app.
  • Bars often have age limits above the legal 18, especially for clubs at weekends.
  • Drinks are expensive, so many locals start the evening at home or at a sauna.

What to drink

  • Long drink — Gin mixed with grapefruit soda, first sold for the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and now Finland's favourite ready-mixed drink, sold in cans and on tap.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 14°C (57°F).

Getting home late

  • Tram — Buy tickets in the HSL app or at ticket machines before you board.
  • Metro — The metro runs east–west from Espoo through Kamppi, the Central Station and Kallio (Sörnäinen), splitting into two branches in the eastern suburbs.
  • Ferry — HSL ferries sail year-round from Market Square to Suomenlinna in about 15–20 minutes on a regular zone A ticket; private waterbuses serve the zoo and islands in summer.
  • Walking — Senate Square, Market Square, Esplanadi, the Design District and Kamppi are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.

Late-night bites

  • Karelian pie — Every bakery, supermarket and café; market halls often sell them warm.
  • Fried vendace — Food tents on Market Square in the warmer months.
  • Salty liquorice — Supermarkets, kiosks and the pick-and-mix counters in any shop.

Staying safe at night

Helsinki is generally low-risk for visitors, but pickpocketing occurs in crowded areas and late-night drunkenness can make the station area unpleasant at weekends. In winter, icy pavements are the biggest hazard, so wear shoes with good grip.
