Day by day
Day 1: Suomenlinna sea fortress and Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square
Suomenlinna sea fortress, Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square and Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church), then Kallio in the evening.
Morning
Suomenlinna sea fortress
Built by the Swedish crown from 1748 across six linked islands, Suomenlinna is a UNESCO-listed sea fortress with bastions, tunnels, cannons, a dry dock and about 800 year-round residents.
Late morning
Helsinki Cathedral and Senate Square
Sit on the cathedral steps at sunset in summer, when the square glows and locals gather there.
Lunch
Lunch: Salmon soup
The Old Market Hall beside Market Square and Hakaniemi Market Hall in Kallio.
Afternoon
Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church)
Designed by the brothers Timo and Tuomo Suomalainen and opened in 1969, this Lutheran church was blasted into a granite outcrop, with raw rock walls and a copper dome ringed by skylights.
Evening
Kallio
Old-school bars and karaoke on Helsinginkatu and Vaasankatu, with the lowest drink prices in the inner city.
Day 2: Market Square and Old Market Hall and Allas Sea Pool
Market Square and Old Market Hall, Allas Sea Pool and Sibelius Monument, then Punavuori and Iso Roobertinkatu in the evening.
Morning
Market Square and Old Market Hall
Eat inside or under cover; the harbour gulls are quick to snatch food from plates.
Late morning
Allas Sea Pool
Floating at the quay between Market Square and Katajanokka, Allas has a heated pool, an unheated seawater pool and saunas, all looking straight at the Cathedral, the harbour and the Suomenlinna ferries.
Lunch
Lunch: Karelian pie
Every bakery, supermarket and café; market halls often sell them warm.
Afternoon
Sibelius Monument
Walk the shoreline from the monument to the café and on towards Seurasaari for a 1-hour loop.
Evening
Punavuori and Iso Roobertinkatu
Cocktail bars, wine bars and summer terraces on the pedestrianised 'Roba' and side streets.
Day 3: Uspenski Cathedral and Esplanadi park
Uspenski Cathedral, Esplanadi park and Ateneum Art Museum, then Kamppi and Erottaja in the evening.
Morning
Uspenski Cathedral
The red-brick Orthodox cathedral, completed in 1868 on a rocky hill in Katajanokka, has gilded onion domes and an interior of icons and a richly decorated iconostasis.
Late morning
Esplanadi park
Buy a coffee and pastry and join the locals on the lawns on a sunny afternoon.
Lunch
Lunch: Cinnamon bun
Cafés everywhere; Café Regatta by the Sibelius Monument is a classic seaside stop.
Afternoon
Ateneum Art Museum
Opposite the Central Station, the Ateneum holds Finland's national collection of art from the 1750s to the 1950s, including the Golden Age paintings of Akseli Gallen-Kallela and Albert Edelfelt, portraits by Helene Schjerfbeck and Hugo Simberg's The Wounded Angel.
Evening
Kamppi and Erottaja
Clubs, live-music venues and late bars close to the centre's transport hubs.
Before you go
HSL day tickets
Day tickets valid for 1 to 13 days cover unlimited trams, metro, buses, trains and the Suomenlinna ferry in the chosen zones.
If it rains
- Swap in Amos Rex (Kamppi): Even if you skip the exhibition, walk over the skylight domes and look down into the galleries.
- Swap in Oodi Central Library (Kluuvi): Go up to the top floor for the terrace view, then use the free toilets and Wi-Fi as a mid-day break.
- Swap in Design District and Design Museum (Punavuori): Start at the Design Museum for context, then walk Fredrikinkatu and Uudenmaankatu for independent studios.
Where to stay for this itinerary
With 3 nights, Kruununhaka keeps most of this route within easy reach. For a calmer or cheaper base, Kamppi ($$$) suits first-timers, shopping, budget and solo travellers. Compare every area.
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 11–13 hours of visiting over 3 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 5.9 hours in December to 18.9 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
