Quick answer

Tokyo's romance is in its contrasts: a quiet garden teahouse in the morning, city lights from a rooftop at dusk and a tiny counter restaurant at night. Cherry-blossom and autumn-leaf seasons add an extra layer. Couples tend to stay in Ebisu and Naka-Meguro.

Where couples should stay

Ebisu and Naka-Meguro

One stop from Shibuya, Ebisu is known for its restaurants, standing bars and the Ebisu Yokocho food alley, with Yebisu Garden Place nearby. Naka-Meguro, a short walk west, follows the Meguro River, whose banks are lined with cherry trees, boutiques and cafés. Both are calmer than Shibuya but well connected.

Good
Excellent restaurants and bars; Calmer, local feel; One stop from Shibuya
Watch out
Fewer hotels; Few major sights
Nearby
Ebisu Yokocho, Meguro River, Daikanyama, Shibuya

Romantic day trips

  • Hakone (About 1 hour 30 minutes by train) — A mountain resort of hot springs, ryokan inns and lake views of Mount Fuji.
  • Lake Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji (About 2 hours by bus or train) — The main town of the Fuji Five Lakes has classic views of Mount Fuji across the water and, nearby, the Chureito Pagoda with Fuji rising behind it.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Sushi, Ramen and Tsukemen. Carry some cash: cards are increasingly accepted, but small shops and stalls may still take cash only.
