Jongno and Insadong
The historic core north of the river holds Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung and Jongmyo Shrine, the hanok houses of Bukchon and Ikseon-dong and the craft and tea shops of Insadong. It is the best base for culture, with plenty of hanok guesthouses as well as mid-range hotels, and the Cheonggyecheon stream for evening walks.
- Good
- Walk to the palaces; Hanok stays available; Good subway links
- Watch out
- Quieter late at night; Old lanes can be hilly
- Nearby
- Gyeongbokgung, Bukchon Hanok Village, Insadong, Gwangjang Market
Romantic day trips
- Nami Island (About 1.5 hours by train and ferry) — A half-moon island in the Bukhan River known for tree-lined avenues of ginkgo and metasequoia, especially vivid in autumn.
- Jeonju Hanok Village (About 1.5–2 hours by KTX) — Jeonju has more than 700 hanok houses in its preserved village, Gyeonggijeon shrine with a portrait of the Joseon founder, and a reputation as Korea's food capital — this is the home of Jeonju bibimbap.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Korean barbecue, Bibimbap and Kimchi stew. Many small restaurants list menus only in Korean; a translation app's camera mode works well.
