Quick answer

Seoul is a genuinely late-night city: barbecue and soju dinners lead to bars, karaoke rooms (noraebang) and clubs that keep going until dawn, especially in Hongdae, Itaewon and Gangnam. The main areas are Hongdae, Itaewon, Gangnam and Sinsa, Euljiro and Jongno 3-ga.

What to drink

  • Makgeolli and soju — Makgeolli is a milky, lightly fizzy rice wine served in bowls; soju is the clear spirit that accompanies barbecue. Both are shared, with friends pouring for each other.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. August has the warmest evenings, with lows around 23°C (73°F).

Getting home late

  • Metro — Tap out at the end of every journey; transfers to buses within about 30 minutes are discounted or free.
  • Bus — Blue trunk buses, green local buses and red express buses cover the city and suburbs.
  • Taxi — The Kakao T app lets you call a taxi with the destination entered in advance.
  • Walking — The palace district, Insadong, Bukchon and Myeongdong are walkable, but the city is large and hilly, so combine walking with the subway.

Late-night bites

  • Tteokbokki — Street stalls in Myeongdong and markets, and the Sindang-dong tteokbokki alley near Dongdaemun.
  • Mung-bean pancake — The pancake stalls at Gwangjang Market, where the batter is ground in front of you.
  • Hotteok — Street stalls in Insadong, Namdaemun Market and Myeongdong, especially in the cold months.

Staying safe at night

Seoul has low street crime, but keep an eye on bags in crowded markets and nightlife areas. Check air-quality forecasts on fine-dust days in spring, and watch for flooding of underpasses during monsoon downpours.
