Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. August has the warmest evenings, with lows around 26°C (79°F).

Getting home late

  • Metro — Umeda and Namba stations are huge; follow the line colour and exit numbers on the signs.
  • Walking — Namba, Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi and Amerikamura are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, and covered arcades help in rain.
  • Taxi — Taxis are easy to hail and useful late at night when trains have stopped.

Late-night bites

  • Takoyaki — Stands all over Dotonbori, Amerikamura and Shinsekai; many have counters to eat at.
  • Butaman — 551 Horai counters in Namba, Umeda, Shin-Osaka and the airports.
  • Ikayaki — The basement food hall of Hanshin department store in Umeda, where long queues form.

Staying safe at night

Osaka has low crime, though bag snatching and pickpocketing occur in crowded Dotonbori, and some bar touts overcharge. Heat stroke is a real risk in July and August, and typhoons can disrupt trains and flights in late summer.

Namba and Dotonbori

Namba is the heart of Minami: the Dotonbori canal with its giant mechanical crabs and neon billboards, Hozenji Yokocho's stone alley, the Kuromon Market and the theatres of Yoshimoto comedy. Nankai trains run straight from here to Kansai Airport, and several subway lines meet below.

Good
Food on every corner; Direct train to Kansai Airport; Lively until late
Watch out
Very crowded and noisy; Pickpocket risk in the crowds
Nearby
Dotonbori, Kuromon Market, Hozenji Yokocho, Namba Yasaka Shrine
