What to drink

  • Saijo sake — Saijo, east of the city, is one of Japan's best-known sake-brewing towns, with soft local water suited to a smooth, mellow style.
  • Setouchi lemon — Hiroshima Prefecture is Japan's largest lemon producer, and local lemons flavour sours, cakes, lemon-pepper seasoning and lemon-flavoured oyster dishes.

Getting home late

  • Walking — The Peace Park, Hondori, Shukkei-en and the castle are within about 20 minutes of each other on foot, along flat riverside streets.
  • Ferry — Two ferry companies sail from Miyajimaguchi to Miyajima in about 10 minutes, and high-speed boats also link the Peace Park area with Miyajima in about 45 minutes.
  • Bus — The free or low-cost Hiroshima Sightseeing Loop Bus ('meipuru-pu') links the station with the Peace Park, the castle and Shukkei-en.

Staying safe at night

Hiroshima has low crime. In summer, heat and humidity are the main health risk, so carry water. Heavy rain during the rainy season and typhoons can trigger landslide warnings in hillside areas; follow official alerts.
