What to drink
- Awamori — Okinawa's distilled spirit, made from long-grain rice and black koji mould; aged versions over three years are called kūsu. Usually drunk with water and ice.
- Orion beer — Okinawa's own light lager, brewed in Nago since the 1950s and served in almost every restaurant on the island.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 27°C (81°F).

|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 17:59 | 15°C (59°F) | 11 |

Getting home late
- Bus — Highway and express buses connect Naha with the resort coast, Nago and the Motobu Peninsula, and airport limousine buses run to many of the big resort hotels.
- Ferry — Book Kerama ferries ahead in summer, and expect cancellations in rough seas.
- Taxi — Taxis are inexpensive by Japanese standards and easy to find in Naha; private taxi tours for the day are a good option for non-drivers.
Late-night bites
- Sea grapes — Izakaya and seafood restaurants, and the Makishi public market.
- Sata andagi — Stalls in the Naha market arcades and roadside shops.
Staying safe at night
Okinawa has low crime. The main risks are the sea and the sun: swim at managed beaches, beware of currents near reef edges, and watch for box jellyfish (habu-kurage) roughly from June to September. Typhoons can halt flights and ferries, and habu snakes live in long grass and forests, so stick to paths after dark.
- Emergency number
- 110 (police), 119 (fire and ambulance), 118 (coast guard)
