Quick answer

Kyoto's nightlife is low-key: small bars, sake and whisky bars, izakaya and riverside drinking rather than clubs. Most of it is concentrated downtown between Kiyamachi and Pontocho. The main areas are Pontocho, Kiyamachi and Gion.

What to drink

  • Matcha and Uji tea — Powdered green tea whisked to a froth, often served with a seasonal sweet; Uji, just south of Kyoto, has grown prized tea for centuries. Matcha also flavours ice cream, parfaits and noodles.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. August has the warmest evenings, with lows around 24°C (75°F).

Getting home late

  • Bus — Buses to Kiyomizu-dera and Kinkaku-ji fill up; take the train to the nearest station and walk, or travel early.
  • Metro — The north–south Karasuma line and east–west Tozai line serve Kyoto Station, downtown, Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace.
  • Tram — The single-car Randen (Keifuku) tram links Shijo-Omiya with Arashiyama and the Kitano area, a scenic alternative to the bus.
  • Walking — Higashiyama, Gion and downtown are best explored on foot, and the walk from Ginkaku-ji to Kiyomizu-dera takes about two hours with stops.
  • Taxi — Taxis are plentiful and useful for groups of three or four; doors open automatically.

Late-night bites

  • Kyoto ramen — Ichijoji's 'ramen street' and shops around Kyoto Station.
  • Tsukemono — Pickle shops in Nishiki Market, many offering tastings.

Staying safe at night

Kyoto has very low crime. The main issues are crowding at major sights, heat exhaustion in July and August, and cyclists on pavements. Typhoons can disrupt travel in late summer and early autumn.
