Money-saving tips
- Fushimi Inari, the Philosopher's Path, Gion, the Kamo River and the Imperial Palace grounds are free.
- Eat a kaiseki lunch rather than dinner for the same cooking at a much lower price.
- Kyoto adds a per-person nightly accommodation tax that rises with the room rate; check it when comparing hotels.
- Book well ahead for cherry blossom and autumn foliage seasons, or visit in January, February or June for lower rates.
- Use a luggage-forwarding service between hotels or cities instead of taxis with big bags.
- Rent a bicycle for a day to link temples without bus fares and queues.
Free things to do
- Fushimi Inari Taisha — The head shrine of Inari, god of rice and commerce, is famous for the thousands of vermilion torii gates donated by businesses that tunnel up Mount Inari.
- Gion and Hanamikoji Street — Kyoto's best-known geisha district has wooden teahouses (ochaya) and restaurants along Hanamikoji Street and the willow-lined Shirakawa canal.
- Philosopher's Path and Ginkaku-ji — This 2 km canal-side stone path runs between Ginkaku-ji (the Silver Pavilion, never actually silvered) and the Nanzen-ji area, passing small temples such as Honen-in.
- Kyoto Imperial Palace and Gyoen — The emperor's residence until 1869 stands inside Kyoto Gyoen, a large park of gravel avenues and lawns.
- Kamo River and Pontocho — The Kamo River's grassy banks are Kyoto's living room, where locals stroll, jog and sit in the evening.
