Gion and Higashiyama

East of the river, Gion's Hanamikoji Street and Shirakawa canal are lined with teahouses, while the slopes of Higashiyama climb past Yasaka Shrine, the stone lanes of Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka and up to Kiyomizu-dera. Ryokan and boutique machiya stays make this the most atmospheric base.

Good
Walk to the old city at dawn before crowds; Traditional ryokan and machiya stays; Evening atmosphere
Watch out
Expensive; Very crowded by day; Fewer train links
Nearby
Kiyomizu-dera, Yasaka Shrine, Kennin-ji, Hanamikoji Street

Romantic day trips

  • Uji (About 20–30 minutes by train) — Uji's Byodo-in, the Phoenix Hall pictured on the ten-yen coin, sits by the Uji River among shops selling some of Japan's most prized green tea.
  • Kurama and Kibune (About 30 minutes by train) — Two mountain villages north of the city are linked by a forest trail of about 1.5 hours over the ridge from Kurama-dera to Kibune Shrine, with its lantern-lined steps.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Kaiseki, Yudofu and Yuba. Some smaller restaurants accept cash only; carry yen.
