Day by day
Day 1: Osaka Castle and Dotonbori
Osaka Castle, Dotonbori and Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory, then Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku in the evening.
Morning
Osaka Castle
Toyotomi Hideyoshi's castle, begun in 1583, was the centre of the struggle that unified Japan.
Late morning
Dotonbori
Take a short canal cruise in the evening for a different angle on the neon, then eat your way along the street.
Lunch
Lunch: Takoyaki
Stands all over Dotonbori, Amerikamura and Shinsekai; many have counters to eat at.
Afternoon
Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory
Two 40-storey towers are joined at the top by a ring-shaped observatory reached by glass-tube escalators that cross the open space between them.
Evening
Shinsekai and Tsutenkaku
Eat kushikatsu at a counter and remember the rule: dip each skewer in the shared sauce only once.
Day 2: Kuromon Market and Namba Yasaka Shrine
Kuromon Market, Namba Yasaka Shrine and Hozenji Yokocho, then Universal Studios Japan in the evening.
Morning
Kuromon Market
Prices are high for street food; compare a few stalls, and go mid-morning when everything is fresh.
Late morning
Namba Yasaka Shrine
This small shrine a short walk from Namba is known for its 12-metre stage built in the shape of a giant lion's head with an open mouth, said to swallow bad luck and bring success in business and exams.
Lunch
Lunch: Okonomiyaki
Okonomiyaki restaurants in Namba, Dotonbori and Umeda, many with hotplates at the table.
Afternoon
Hozenji Yokocho
Splash water on the statue with the ladle and make a wish, as locals do, then eat at one of the alley's okonomiyaki or kushikatsu restaurants.
Evening
Universal Studios Japan
Arrive well before opening on a weekday, and head first for the area you care about most.
Day 3: Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and Shitenno-ji
Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, Shitenno-ji and Sumiyoshi Taisha, then Abeno Harukas 300 in the evening.
Morning
Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan
One of the world's largest public aquariums follows the Pacific Ring of Fire through 15 tanks, spiralling down around a central tank nine metres deep where whale sharks and manta rays swim.
Late morning
Shitenno-ji
The outer grounds are free; pay only for the central precinct and the Gokuraku-jodo garden.
Lunch
Lunch: Kushikatsu
Counter restaurants in Shinsekai, the home of the dish, and around Namba.
Afternoon
Sumiyoshi Taisha
The head of more than 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines across Japan, this shrine to the gods of the sea is approached over the Sorihashi, a steeply arched red bridge.
Evening
Abeno Harukas 300
Clear winter days give the longest views; the department store below has a large food hall.
Before you go
- Universal Studios Japan: Buy dated tickets online in advance; Super Nintendo World can require a timed entry ticket or an Express Pass on busy days.
- Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan: Buying tickets online lets you skip the ticket-office queue on weekends and holidays.
ICOCA card
A rechargeable IC card for metro, JR, private railways and buses across Kansai, also accepted at convenience stores.
If it rains
- Swap in Cupnoodles Museum Osaka Ikeda (Ikeda): Take the Hankyu Takarazuka line from Umeda to Ikeda, about 20 minutes, and arrive early on weekends for the workshop.
- Swap in Tenjinbashisuji shopping street (Tenma): Start at Osaka Tenmangu, walk north and finish with dinner in the Tenma izakaya lanes.
Where to stay for this itinerary
With 3 nights, Namba and Dotonbori keeps most of this route within easy reach. For a calmer or cheaper base, Umeda ($$$) suits first-timers, shopping, luxury and families. Compare every area.
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 19–24 hours of visiting over 3 days, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.8 hours in December to 14.5 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
