Staying near the beach
Getting to the beaches
- Train — The JR Yamanote line loops around central Tokyo, linking Shinjuku, Shibuya, Harajuku, Tokyo Station, Akihabara and Ueno in about an hour for the full circle, with trains every few minutes.
- Metro — Tokyo Metro and Toei subway lines are colour-coded and numbered, with station names and announcements in English.
- Bus — Buses fill the gaps between rail lines; in central Tokyo most Toei buses charge a flat fare, paid with your IC card when boarding at the front.
- Boat — Water buses on the Sumida River link Asakusa with Hama-rikyu garden and Odaiba, a scenic alternative to the train.
Beach-weather months
Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in August. None of them is peak season, so beaches stay manageable.
Beach safety
Tokyo has low street crime and is easy to walk at night, but stay alert to touts and drink-spiking warnings in Kabukicho and Roppongi. Learn your hotel's earthquake procedures, and take heatstroke seriously in July and August. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
