Getting home late
- Walking — Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia, the old-town lanes and the Villa Comunale are all within about 10 minutes of each other; lifts and stairways link the centre to the marinas.
- Ferry — Buy return tickets early for Capri in summer and check sea conditions, as sailings are cancelled in rough weather.
- Bus — Sit on the right-hand side towards Positano for sea views, and expect queues and standing room in summer.
- Taxi — Taxis wait at Piazza Tasso and the port; fares on the peninsula and to the Amalfi Coast are high, so agree the price before setting off.
Late-night bites
- Provolone del Monaco — Delis (salumerie) on Corso Italia and Via San Cesareo, and on antipasto platters.
- Fior di latte and mozzarella — Caseifici (dairy shops) in town and on the peninsula; buy it the day it is made.
- Sorrento walnuts — Delis and food shops in the old town, especially in autumn after the harvest.
Staying safe at night
Sorrento is generally relaxed for visitors, but pickpocketing happens on the crowded Circumvesuviana and at busy ferry piers. Take care with heat and sun at Pompeii in summer, and swim only where you can climb out easily, as the sea is deep off the platforms.
