Piazza Tasso
Take an evening coffee or gelato here around 9pm, when locals come out for the passeggiata along Corso Italia. Allow 30 minutes.
Late morning
Vallone dei Mulini
Look from the viewpoint on Via Fuorimura, a minute's walk from Piazza Tasso. Allow 15 minutes.
Lunch
Lunch: Gnocchi alla sorrentina
Trattorias across the old town and Marina Grande; it usually arrives in its own small terracotta dish.
Afternoon
Villa Comunale
Come at sunset, then take the lift down to the port for a seafront walk. Allow 30 minutes.
Late afternoon
Cloister of San Francesco
Visit in the morning before weddings and events, when the cloister is often quiet. Allow 20 minutes.
Evening
Via San Cesareo
Many shops offer limoncello tastings; compare a few before buying.
Before you go
If it rains
- Swap in Sorrento Cathedral (Centro storico and Piazza Tasso): Look closely at the inlaid-wood choir stalls and stations of the cross, a good introduction to Sorrento's intarsia tradition.
- Swap in Museo Correale di Terranova (Marina Piccola and the port): Save it for a hot afternoon or a rainy day, and finish at the garden belvedere.
- Swap in Museobottega della Tarsia Lignea (Centro storico and Piazza Tasso): Visit before buying inlaid-wood souvenirs so you can recognise quality work.
Where to stay for this itinerary
$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, shopping and nightlife
Centro storico and Piazza Tasso
Old-town lanes, Corso Italia shops and the main square above the gorge
Pace and daylight
The sights in this plan add up to roughly 3–3 hours of visiting over one day, before meals and getting between them. Daylight runs from about 9.3 hours in December to 15.1 hours in June, so in winter start early and keep museums for the afternoon.
Getting between stops: Walking. Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia, the old-town lanes and the Villa Comunale are all within about 10 minutes of each other; lifts and stairways link the centre to the marinas.
