Marina Grande
Sorrento's old fishing village is reached by a stepped lane from the western edge of the old town, a walk of about 10 minutes downhill. Fishing boats are pulled up on a small beach, bathing platforms jut into the sea and seafood restaurants sit on the waterfront. It has a few guesthouses and feels far calmer than the centre at night.
- Good
- Waterfront dining; Swimming platforms on the doorstep; Quiet after dark
- Watch out
- Steep walk back up to the centre; Limited accommodation
- Nearby
- Bagni bathing platforms, Old town, Villa Comunale
Getting to the beaches
- Train — The EAV Circumvesuviana runs from Sorrento to Naples in about 70 minutes, stopping at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri and Ercolano Scavi.
- Ferry — Ferries and hydrofoils from Marina Piccola reach Capri in about 20–25 minutes and Naples in about 35–45 minutes, with seasonal boats to Positano and Amalfi.
- Bus — SITA buses run along the Amalfi Coast road to Positano and Amalfi from the bus stop by the train station, and local buses serve Massa Lubrense, Sant'Agata and Marina del Cantone.
- Scooter — Scooters are widely available to hire and are how many locals travel, but the coast road is narrow, busy and demanding for inexperienced riders.
Beach-weather months
Days of 24°C (75°F) or more with no more than nine rainy days come in June–September. The busiest of those is July, so book early.
Beach safety
Sorrento is generally relaxed for visitors, but pickpocketing happens on the crowded Circumvesuviana and at busy ferry piers. Take care with heat and sun at Pompeii in summer, and swim only where you can climb out easily, as the sea is deep off the platforms. Swim at lifeguarded beaches where possible and follow local flag warnings.
