Centro storico and Piazza Tasso

The historic centre spreads around Piazza Tasso, with the grid of lanes such as Via San Cesareo running west towards the cathedral and the Sedile Dominova. Corso Italia is the main shopping street and the bus and train station is about five minutes' walk east. Staying here puts restaurants, bars and the lift down to the port within easy walking distance.

Marina Grande

Sorrento's old fishing village is reached by a stepped lane from the western edge of the old town, a walk of about 10 minutes downhill. Fishing boats are pulled up on a small beach, bathing platforms jut into the sea and seafood restaurants sit on the waterfront. It has a few guesthouses and feels far calmer than the centre at night.

Marina Piccola and the port

Marina Piccola is Sorrento's ferry and hydrofoil harbour, with boats to Capri, Naples, Positano and Amalfi. A public lift and a zigzag road link it to the Villa Comunale and the centre. Hotels on the cliffs above it, along Via Correale and Via Marina Piccola, have some of the town's best bay views.

Via Capo

Via Capo runs west from the centre along the cliffs towards Capo di Sorrento, lined with hotels set in gardens, many with pools and sea views. It is quieter than the centre and close to the Bagni della Regina Giovanna, with local buses and a walk of 15–25 minutes into town.

Sant'Agnello

Sant'Agnello is a separate municipality that merges with Sorrento to the east, about 20 minutes' walk or one Circumvesuviana stop from Piazza Tasso. It has several large hotels on the cliffs with lifts to bathing platforms, plus lemon and orange groves between residential streets. Prices are usually a little lower than in central Sorrento.

Sant'Agata sits on the ridge of the peninsula about 9 km from Sorrento, so it looks down on both gulfs. The viewpoint at the former monastery of the Deserto above the village takes in Capri, Vesuvius and the Li Galli islets. It is a quiet base for walkers, with buses to Sorrento in about 20–30 minutes.

Good
Cooler in summer; Views of both gulfs; Lower prices
Watch out
