Quick answer
Florence's nights revolve around aperitivo, wine bars and busy squares rather than big clubs. Students and locals gather around Piazza Santo Spirito and Santa Croce, and in summer the evening walk along the river runs late. Most bars close around 2am. The main areas are Piazza Santo Spirito, Santa Croce and Sant'Ambrogio, San Niccolò and San Frediano.

Nightlife tips
- Aperitivo usually runs from about 6:30pm to 9pm, often with snacks included in the price of a drink.
- Local ordinances limit drinking in the street in some areas and at some hours; drink at the bar or on its terrace if unsure.
- Night buses are limited, but the centre is walkable; use a taxi rank or app to get back from the hills.

What to drink
- Chianti Classico — The red wine from the hills between Florence and Siena, made mainly from Sangiovese and marked by the black rooster seal on the neck of the bottle. Most trattorias pour a house red by the glass or carafe.

Getting home late
- Walking — Almost every sight in the centre is within a 25-minute walk, and the riverside Lungarni link the bridges.
- Tram — Validate your ticket on board; inspectors check regularly.
- Bus — Buy tickets at tobacconists or through the official app before boarding, then validate once on the bus.
- Taxi — A fixed fare applies between the airport and the centre; confirm it with the driver before setting off.
Late-night bites
- Lampredotto — Tripe carts (trippai) around the city, including near the Mercato Centrale, Sant'Ambrogio market and the Mercato Nuovo loggia; ask for the bun dipped in broth ('bagnato').
- Crostini di fegatini — Any traditional trattoria, usually as part of an antipasto toscano.
- Finocchiona and Tuscan salumi — Salumerie, market counters and wine bars (enoteche) in the Oltrarno and around the Mercato Centrale.
Staying safe at night
Florence is generally safe for visitors, but pickpockets work the buses, the station, the Duomo square and the Ponte Vecchio. Watch for petition and friendship-bracelet tricks around the major sights, and in summer take the heat seriously: carry water and avoid long walks at midday.

Santa Croce
Built around the long square in front of the Basilica of Santa Croce, this area mixes leather shops and the old leather school behind the church with bars along Via de' Benci and Via Ghibellina. It is a 10-minute walk from the Duomo, has a good spread of mid-range hotels and apartments, and the Bargello and Casa Buonarroti are on its doorstep.
- Good
- Central but calmer than the Duomo; Plenty of trattorias and wine bars; Good choice of apartments
- Watch out
- Bars around Via de' Benci are noisy at weekends; Piazza Santa Croce fills with tour groups by day
- Nearby
- Basilica of Santa Croce, Bargello, Casa Buonarroti, Sant'Ambrogio Market
