Quick answer
Verona's nightlife is relaxed and centred on aperitivo, wine bars and late dinners rather than clubs. Summer evenings revolve around the opera, the Roman Theatre and terraces in Piazza Bra and Piazza delle Erbe, while students keep Veronetta's bars busy. The main areas are Piazza delle Erbe, Veronetta, Piazza Bra and the Liston and Via Sottoriva.

What to drink
- Amarone, Valpolicella and Soave — Amarone della Valpolicella is a powerful red made from grapes dried for months before pressing; lighter Valpolicella and Ripasso, crisp white Soave and sweet Recioto all come from the hills around Verona.
- Spritz — The Veneto's orange aperitivo of prosecco or white wine with Aperol, Campari or Select and a splash of soda, served over ice with a slice of orange or an olive.

Getting home late
- Walking — Most sights lie within a 20-minute walk of Piazza Bra, and pedestrian streets such as Via Mazzini link the main squares.
- Bus — Buy tickets before boarding at tobacconists or machines and validate them on board.
- Taxi — Taxis wait at Porta Nuova and Piazza Bra and are useful for the airport or late after the opera, when queues can be long.
Late-night bites
- Monte Veronese — Cheese shops and the cheese boards of osterie and wine bars.
Staying safe at night
Pickpockets work the crowds at Juliet's House, Piazza delle Erbe and around Porta Nuova station, so keep bags closed. Summer heat on the Arena's stone tiers can be intense during afternoon visits.
