Getting around Florence
Public transport, passes, airport connections and when a car makes sense.
Updated By the AMZBooking editorial team
Quick answer
The historic centre is compact and flat, so walking is the main way to get around: Santa Maria Novella station to the Duomo takes about 10 minutes, and the Duomo to the Ponte Vecchio about 7. Buses and two tram lines cover the airport, the outskirts and the hills, and most of the centre is a limited traffic zone (ZTL) closed to visitors' cars. No.

Ways to get around
Walking
Almost every sight in the centre is within a 25-minute walk, and the riverside Lungarni link the bridges. Pavements are narrow and stone-paved, so wear supportive shoes.
Tram
Line T2 links Florence Airport with Piazza dell'Unità beside Santa Maria Novella station in about 20 minutes; line T1 runs from the station to Villa Costanza park-and-ride and to the Careggi hospital district.
Validate your ticket on board; inspectors check regularly.
Bus
City buses reach places beyond walking range: lines 12 and 13 climb to Piazzale Michelangelo and line 7 runs from San Marco up to Fiesole.
Buy tickets at tobacconists or through the official app before boarding, then validate once on the bus.
Taxi
White taxis wait at ranks at the station, Piazza della Repubblica and the airport; they rarely stop when hailed in the street, so use a rank or book by phone or app.
A fixed fare applies between the airport and the centre; confirm it with the driver before setting off.
Train
Santa Maria Novella (Firenze SMN) is the main station, with high-speed trains to Bologna, Rome and Milan and regional trains to Pisa, Lucca, Arezzo and Siena.
Cycling
Bike-share and e-scooter schemes operate across the city, with cycle lanes along the Arno and the ring avenues, but the historic streets are narrow and crowded with pedestrians.
Tickets and passes
Duomo combined passes
The Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore sells passes that bundle the dome climb, bell tower, Baptistery, crypt and cathedral museum; the dome time slot is chosen when you book.
PassePartout (Uffizi Galleries)
A combined ticket valid over several days for the Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens, worth it if you plan to see all three.
Firenze Card
A 72-hour museum pass covering many of the city's main museums with reserved entry; it only pays off if you visit several paid museums a day.
From the airport
Florence Airport (Peretola) is about 5 km north-west of the centre; the T2 tram reaches Piazza dell'Unità beside Santa Maria Novella in about 20 minutes, and a taxi takes 20–25 minutes. Pisa Airport, about 85 km away, has more international flights: take the Pisa Mover to Pisa Centrale and then a train to Florence (about an hour), or a direct coach. Bologna Airport is roughly an hour away by airport shuttle and high-speed train.
Do you need a car?
No. Cars are barred from the historic-centre ZTL without a permit and cameras issue fines automatically. Hire a car only for Chianti and the Tuscan countryside, and collect it at the airport or on the edge of the city.
