Quick answer

San Sebastián's romance is in its setting: a crescent bay lit up at night, sunset from the hills and long dinners. Couples do best splitting time between the old-town bars and quieter walks at either end of the bay. Couples tend to stay in Antiguo and Ondarreta.

Ride the old funicular up in the late afternoon and watch the bay and Santa Clara island turn gold as the city lights come on.

2.Evening walk along the Paseo de la Concha

The white railings and lamp posts of the promenade are at their best after dark, with the lit-up bay curving towards Urgull.

4.Boat to Santa Clara island

In summer, take a picnic and the short boat ride to the island's tiny beach and lighthouse.

Share a txuleta or whole grilled turbot with a bottle of txakoli at a grill restaurant in the city or in Getaria.

Where couples should stay

$$$ · Best for families, quiet stays, couples and beach

Antiguo and Ondarreta

At the western end of the bay, Antiguo sits behind Ondarreta beach, the Miramar Palace gardens and the lower station of the Monte Igueldo funicular. It is calmer and more residential than the centre, with family-friendly beach days and a flat seafront walk to Chillida's Peine del Viento sculptures at the end of the bay.

Good
Calm, family-oriented beach; Near Igueldo and the Peine del Viento; Quiet at night
Watch out
About 30 minutes' walk to the Parte Vieja; Fewer bars and restaurants
Nearby
Ondarreta beach, Miramar Palace, Peine del Viento, Monte Igueldo funicular

Romantic day trips

  • Hondarribia (About 35–45 minutes by bus) — A walled medieval town on the Bidasoa estuary facing France, with a steep Parte Alta of painted balconies and a castle-turned-parador, and the fishermen's quarter of La Marina lined with pintxo bars.
  • Getaria and Zarautz (About 30–45 minutes by bus) — Getaria is a fishing port famous for whole turbot grilled over charcoal outside its asadores, terraced txakoli vineyards and the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum.
  • Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Biarritz (About 1 hour by train) — Across the border in the French Basque Country, Saint-Jean-de-Luz has a sheltered beach, a fishing harbour and the church where Louis XIV married.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Hot pintxos cooked to order, Txuleta and Bacalao al pil-pil. Tap water is free on request and safe to drink.
