Quick answer

Porto is romantic in an unpolished way: sunsets from the bridge, port by candlelight in old lodges and fado in small taverns. Couples tend to stay in Ribeira.

Ribeira

Ribeira is the medieval riverside quarter at the foot of the old town, with tall, narrow houses, arcaded Cais da Ribeira restaurants and the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge. River cruises leave from the quay, and Palácio da Bolsa and São Francisco church are a few minutes' walk uphill. It is atmospheric and central but steep and crowded.

Good
River views from many rooms; Walk to Gaia's port lodges; The postcard setting of Porto
Watch out
Steep streets and stairs; Touristy restaurants on the quay; Noise late in summer
Nearby
Dom Luís I Bridge, Palácio da Bolsa, Church of São Francisco, Porto Cathedral

Romantic day trips

  • Douro Valley (About 2–2.5 hours by train) — Terraced vineyards along the Douro river produce port and table wines in a UNESCO-listed landscape.
  • Aveiro (About 40 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes by train) — A town of canals crossed by colourful moliceiro boats, Art Nouveau buildings and sweet ovos moles egg-yolk pastries.
  • Viana do Castelo (About 1.5 hours by train) — A seaside town at the mouth of the Lima river, known for the Santa Luzia basilica on its hilltop, traditional gold filigree jewellery and long Atlantic beaches.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Francesinha, Tripe Porto style and Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá. Restaurants on the Ribeira quay charge more for the view; better value is a few streets uphill.
