Saint-Pierre

Saint-Pierre is the oldest part of Bordeaux, a tight grid of narrow streets behind the riverfront around Place du Parlement and Place Saint-Pierre. The Porte Cailhau gate, the Grosse Cloche and the Miroir d'Eau are all within a few minutes' walk, and the squares fill with restaurant terraces from spring to autumn. Apartments and boutique hotels in old stone buildings are the usual places to stay.

Good
Walk to almost every central sight; Dense choice of restaurants and wine bars; Riverfront and Miroir d'Eau on the doorstep
Watch out
Terrace noise late into the evening; Many old buildings have stairs and no lift
Nearby
Place de la Bourse, Porte Cailhau, Place du Parlement, Grosse Cloche

Romantic day trips

  • Saint-Émilion (About 35 minutes by train) — A UNESCO-listed hilltop wine village of honey-coloured stone, steep cobbled lanes and the Église Monolithe, a church carved out of the limestone hillside.
  • Médoc wine route (About 1 hour by car to Pauillac) — The D2 road runs north through Margaux, Saint-Julien, Pauillac and Saint-Estèphe, past some of the most famous names in wine.
  • Arcachon (About 50 minutes by train) — A seaside resort on the Arcachon Bay with a long beach, the Ville d'Hiver quarter of 19th-century villas on the hill and oyster villages around the bay.
  • Sauternes (About 45 minutes by car) — Rolling vineyards along the Ciron river produce the sweet white wines of Sauternes and Barsac.
  • Biarritz (About 2 hours by train) — The Basque Country's Belle Époque resort has surf beaches, the Rocher de la Vierge footbridge out into the Atlantic and a covered market.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Entrecôte à la bordelaise, Arcachon oysters and Lamprey Bordeaux-style. Wine by the glass is widely available, so you rarely need to commit to a whole bottle.
