What to drink

  • Port wine — Fortified wine from the Douro Valley, aged in Gaia. Ruby ports are fruity and young, tawnies are aged in wood with nutty flavours, and white port mixed with tonic is a popular summer aperitif.
  • Vinho verde — A light, slightly sparkling young wine from the Minho region north of Porto, mostly white, refreshing with seafood.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 15°C (59°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — Plan routes downhill where possible and use the funicular or metro to go back up.
  • Metro — Buy a rechargeable Andante card and validate it every time you board, including when changing lines.
  • Tram — Historic trams on lines 1, 18 and 22 are slow but scenic, especially line 1 along the river to Foz.
  • Bus — STCP buses cover areas the metro does not, including Foz and Serralves.
  • Ride-hailing — Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Bolt and metered taxis are reasonably priced and useful for steep hills and late nights.

Late-night bites

  • Roast pork sandwich — Long-running snack bars around Praça dos Poveiros and the Baixa.
  • Bifana — Cafés and snack bars all over the city.

Staying safe at night

Porto is generally safe; pickpockets operate in crowded spots such as Ribeira, the trams and São Bento station. Wet granite streets are slippery, and Atlantic beaches can have strong currents, so swim only where lifeguards are present.
