Quick answer
Lisbon's nightlife starts late and spills onto the streets: crowds drink outside tiny bars in Bairro Alto, move on to Cais do Sodré and finish in riverside clubs. Fado houses offer a quieter night. The main areas are Bairro Alto, Cais do Sodré, Príncipe Real, Santa Apolónia waterfront and Alfama and Mouraria.

What to drink
- Ginjinha — A sweet sour-cherry liqueur served in a small glass, with or without a cherry. It is a quick stand-up drink rather than a cocktail.
- Bica — Lisbon's name for a short, strong espresso, drunk standing at the counter several times a day, often with a pastry.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. August has the warmest evenings, with lows around 18°C (64°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 17:38 | 8°C (46°F) | 10 |
| April | About 20:13 | 11°C (52°F) | 9 |

Getting home late
- Metro — Load the rechargeable transport card sold at stations with pay-as-you-go credit to pay less per ride than single tickets.
- Tram — Tickets bought on board cost much more than card fares.
- Ferry — Commuter ferries cross the Tagus from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas and from Terreiro do Paço to the south bank, giving cheap river views of the city.
- Ride-hailing — Ride-hailing apps are widely used and usually cheaper than taxis; licensed beige or black-and-green taxis can also be hailed or found at ranks.
- Walking — Most central sights are within 30 minutes on foot, but the hills are steep and the polished stone pavements slippery, so plan routes downhill where possible.
Late-night bites
- Bifana — Snack bars and tascas throughout the city; look for counters where workers stand and eat at lunchtime.
- Steak sandwich — Cervejarias, cafés and snack bars across Lisbon.
Staying safe at night
Lisbon is generally relaxed for visitors, but pickpockets work on Tram 28, in the Baixa and at busy viewpoints. Street sellers offering drugs in the Baixa and Bairro Alto are a known scam. The polished stone pavements are very slippery when wet.
