Quick answer

Nightlife ranges from Albufeira's party strip and Lagos's backpacker bars to marina lounges in Vilamoura and relaxed terraces in Tavira. In summer, bars stay open until 2am or later, with clubs until dawn in the main resorts. The main areas are Albufeira 'The Strip', Lagos old town, Vilamoura Marina and Praia da Rocha.

What to drink

  • Medronho — A strong spirit distilled from the red fruit of the strawberry tree, which grows wild in the Monchique and Caldeirão hills. It is traditionally drunk as a digestif.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 19°C (66°F).

Getting home late

  • Bus — Regional buses link the coastal towns and some inland villages, with local town buses in Faro, Albufeira and Lagos; services are reduced in winter and on Sundays.
  • Ferry — Check the time of the last return boat, especially outside the summer season.
  • Taxi — Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available in the main towns and at Faro Airport, and are useful for evening trips between nearby resorts.

Staying safe at night

The main risks are natural: strong currents and waves on west-coast and exposed beaches, unstable cliff edges and rockfalls, and intense summer heat. Thefts from parked cars at beaches and viewpoints are common, so leave nothing visible inside.
