Money-saving tips
- Beaches, cliff walks and viewpoints such as Ponta da Piedade and Cape St Vincent are free.
- Public ferries to the Ria Formosa islands cost far less than private boat tours.
- Accommodation prices in July and August can be double those of May, June or late September.
- Eat the 'prato do dia' (dish of the day) at lunch in local cafés for a cheap, filling meal.
- If you use the A22 motorway often, compare the hire company's toll device fee with using the free EN125.
Free things to do
- Ponta da Piedade — South of Lagos, a headland of sandstone pillars, arches and grottoes stands above turquoise water, with a lighthouse and a long wooden stairway down to a small landing stage.
- Seven Hanging Valleys Trail — This clifftop path runs about 6 km each way between Praia da Marinha and Praia do Vale Centeanes, past sinkholes, rock arches and dry 'hanging' valleys that end abruptly above the sea.
- Cape St Vincent — Mainland Europe's south-western tip is a headland of high cliffs topped by one of Europe's most powerful lighthouses.
- Monchique and Fóia — The Serra de Monchique rises to 902 metres at Fóia, the Algarve's highest point, with views on clear days to the coast and Cape St Vincent.
- Algar Seco and the Carvoeiro boardwalk — A wooden boardwalk runs along the clifftops east of Carvoeiro to Algar Seco, a maze of eroded rock arches, pools and grottoes, including a 'window' in the rock framing the sea.
- Loulé Market — Loulé's red-domed, Moorish-revival market hall sells fish, cheese, honey, figs, almonds and local crafts daily except Sundays, and on Saturday mornings a large open-air market spreads across the surrounding streets.

Getting around for less
The Algarve is about 150 km from east to west, linked by the A22 motorway and the slower EN125 road. Most visitors hire a car, since trains and buses connect the main towns but many beaches, trailheads and villages are hard to reach without one.
