Lagos

Lagos combines a historic walled centre of cobbled streets with a marina, a long sandy beach at Meia Praia and the coves and rock arches of Praia do Camilo and Ponta da Piedade a short walk south. It has a young, international crowd, plenty of bars and boat and kayak trips into the grottoes.

Good
Walkable town with character; Spectacular coves nearby; Good train and bus links
Watch out
Crowded in July and August; Streets and coves busy with day-trippers
Nearby
Ponta da Piedade, Praia do Camilo, Meia Praia, Sagres

Romantic day trips

  • Seville (About 2 hours by car or coach) — Andalusia's capital has the Alcázar palace, the Gothic cathedral with its Giralda tower and the tiled Plaza de España.
  • Ayamonte and the Guadiana (About 45 minutes by car plus a short ferry) — From Vila Real de Santo António, a 1774 grid-planned town rebuilt after the great earthquake, a small ferry crosses the Guadiana to Ayamonte in Spain for tapas.
  • Aljezur and the Costa Vicentina (About 35 minutes by car from Lagos) — On the wild Atlantic west coast, Aljezur has a ruined Moorish castle and is near surf beaches such as Amoreira and Monte Clérigo, with Odeceixe's river-mouth beach further north.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Cataplana, Grilled sardines and Piri-piri chicken. Restaurants a street or two back from the seafront are usually better value.
