Old Town

Palma's old town (Casc Antic) spreads behind La Seu and the Almudaina palace, a maze of narrow streets with grand townhouses whose patios can be glimpsed through open gates. It holds the Arab Baths, the Basílica de Sant Francesc and Plaça Major, and many of the city's boutique hotels occupy restored mansions.

Good
Walk to all the main sights; Atmospheric boutique hotels; Quiet lanes in the evening
Watch out
Expensive in summer; Cars restricted, so luggage means walking
Nearby
La Seu cathedral, Almudaina Palace, Banys Àrabs, Plaça Major

Romantic day trips

  • Sóller and Port de Sóller (About 1 hour by vintage train) — The wooden carriages of the Sóller railway, opened in 1912, climb through tunnels and orchards in the Serra de Tramuntana to Sóller, a town of orange groves and modernist façades.
  • Valldemossa (About 30 minutes by bus) — A stone village in the mountains around the Carthusian monastery where Frédéric Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838–39.
  • Deià (About 45 minutes by bus) — A honey-coloured village on a hill above the sea, long a haven for artists; the poet Robert Graves lived and is buried here, and his house is a museum.
  • Es Trenc (About 45 minutes by car) — A long, undeveloped beach of white sand and clear turquoise water backed by dunes and salt flats in the south of the island, one of Mallorca's most popular natural beaches.
  • Cap de Formentor (About 1 hour 15 minutes by car) — Mallorca's northernmost peninsula has a spectacular cliff road to a lighthouse, with viewpoints such as the Mirador d'es Colomer and the pine-fringed Formentor beach.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Pa amb oli, Tumbet and Frit mallorquí. Book Santa Catalina and La Lonja restaurants ahead on summer weekends.
