Quick answer

Barcelona's romance is in its rooftops and the sea: sunset over the city from a hilltop, cava on a terrace and long dinners in the lanes of El Born. Couples tend to stay in Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter).

Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)

The oldest part of the city grew over Roman Barcino, whose walls and temple columns still appear between later buildings. Narrow lanes lead to Barcelona Cathedral, the quiet Plaça de Sant Felip Neri and the arcaded Plaça Reial, and Liceu and Jaume I Metro stations put the rest of the city within reach. It is central and atmospheric but busy and noisy.

Good
Walk to most central sights; Atmospheric lanes and squares; Plenty of bars and restaurants
Watch out
Crowded and noisy, especially near La Rambla; Pickpockets target the busiest streets; Many small, dark rooms
Nearby
Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça Reial, La Rambla, Plaça de Sant Felip Neri

Romantic day trips

  • Sitges (About 40 minutes by train) — A whitewashed seaside town with a string of sandy beaches, a church on a headland, a lively old town and a long LGBTQ+-friendly tradition.
  • Girona (About 40 minutes by high-speed train) — Girona's old town climbs from colourful houses along the Onyar river to a Gothic cathedral reached by a grand stairway, with a well-preserved medieval Jewish quarter and walkable city walls.
  • Figueres and the Dalí Theatre-Museum (About 55 minutes by high-speed train) — Salvador Dalí designed his own Theatre-Museum in his home town: a red building topped with giant eggs, holding the Mae West Room, the Rainy Taxi and his crypt.
  • Tossa de Mar (About 1 hour 30 minutes by coach) — A Costa Brava village with a medieval walled town (Vila Vella) on a headland above a golden bay, plus quieter coves along the coastal path.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Black rice, Fideuà and Sausage with white beans. Book weekend dinners at popular places, and expect many kitchens to close between lunch and dinner service.
