Barrio Santa Cruz
Santa Cruz is the tangle of whitewashed alleys, tiled patios and small squares such as Plaza de Doña Elvira and Plaza de Santa Cruz squeezed between the Alcázar walls and the Cathedral. It is the most atmospheric and central base, with flamenco tablaos and the main sights within minutes, but it is also the most touristed part of the city.
- Good
- Steps from the main sights; Romantic lanes and squares; Quiet late at night in the back streets
- Watch out
- Crowded during the day; Taxis cannot reach many lanes
- Nearby
- Real Alcázar, Seville Cathedral, Hospital de los Venerables, Murillo Gardens
Romantic day trips
- Córdoba (About 45 minutes by high-speed train) — Córdoba's Mezquita-Catedral, a vast mosque with forests of striped arches and a cathedral built inside it, is one of Spain's great monuments.
- Jerez de la Frontera (About 1 hour by train) — The home of sherry has bodegas offering cellar tours and tastings, the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art with its dancing-horse shows, and a strong flamenco tradition.
- Cádiz (About 1 hour 45 minutes by train) — One of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in western Europe sits on a narrow peninsula surrounded by the Atlantic, with the golden-domed cathedral, the Torre Tavira camera obscura, fried-fish shops and city beaches such as La Caleta.
- Ronda (About 2 hours by bus or car) — A dramatic town split by the El Tajo gorge and joined by the 18th-century Puente Nuevo bridge, with one of Spain's oldest bullrings and walks along the cliff edge.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Salmorejo, Spinach with chickpeas and Pork cheeks. Some family-run bars close for part of August when owners escape the heat.
