Albaicín
The Albaicín faces the Alhambra across the Darro valley, a maze of steep cobbled lanes, small squares and cármenes, walled houses with gardens. Boutique hotels in old houses give terraces with Alhambra views, Calle Calderería Nueva has Moroccan-style tea rooms, and the Mirador de San Nicolás is at the top. Minibuses climb from Plaza Nueva.
- Good
- Most atmospheric place to stay; Alhambra views from many terraces; Walk to Plaza Nueva and the centre
- Watch out
- Steep, cobbled streets are hard with luggage; Taxis cannot reach many lanes
- Nearby
- Mirador de San Nicolás, Carrera del Darro, Calle Calderería Nueva, Plaza Larga
Romantic day trips
- Sierra Nevada (About 45–60 minutes by bus) — Spain's highest mountain range rises behind the city, and the Sierra Nevada ski resort at Pradollano is one of the southernmost in Europe, usually open from late autumn to spring.
- The Alpujarras (About 2 hours by bus) — White villages of flat-roofed houses cling to the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada in the Poqueira gorge, with walking trails between them, rug-weaving workshops and Trevélez, famous for its cured ham.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Tortilla del Sacromonte, Broad beans with ham and Trevélez ham. Book view terraces in the Albaicín ahead for sunset, especially at weekends.
