Getting home late
- Walking — Walking is the best way to explore the centre, the Albaicín and Realejo; allow extra time for steep, cobbled lanes and stairs.
- Bus — Take the minibus up to the Alhambra or the Mirador de San Nicolás and walk down.
- Metro — The single metro line runs from Albolote in the north to Armilla in the south, via the railway station and Calle Recogidas; it is useful for the station and the Pedro Antonio de Alarcón area.
- Taxi — Taxis are inexpensive and useful for the Alhambra entrance and late returns from Sacromonte, though cars cannot reach many Albaicín lanes.
Late-night bites
- Free tapas — Bars on Calle Navas, around Plaza Nueva, in Realejo and along Pedro Antonio de Alarcón.
- Fried aubergine with cane honey — Almost every tapas bar in the city.
Staying safe at night
Pickpocketing occurs at the Mirador de San Nicolás, Plaza Nueva and on crowded buses, so keep bags closed. Some sellers near the cathedral press sprigs of rosemary on visitors and then ask for money; a firm 'no, gracias' is enough. In summer, avoid strenuous walks in the afternoon heat.

Beyond the Albaicín, Sacromonte's hillside is dotted with whitewashed cave dwellings dug into the rock, some still lived in and others turned into flamenco venues and holiday rentals. The Sacromonte Caves museum explains the traditional way of life, and the Abbey of Sacromonte sits higher up the valley. It is quiet by day and comes alive for evening flamenco.
