Quick answer
Barcelona's nights start late: dinner at 9pm or 10pm, bars until 2am or 3am, and clubs that fill after 1am and run until dawn. The scene ranges from cocktail bars in El Born and terrace bars on Gràcia's squares to seafront clubs at the Port Olímpic. The main areas are El Born, Gothic Quarter and Plaça Reial, El Raval, Port Olímpic, Gràcia and Poble-sec.

Getting home late
- Metro — Keep bags zipped and in front of you on L1 and L3 around Catalunya, Liceu and Sagrada Família, where pickpockets work the crowds.
- Walking — The Gothic Quarter, El Born and Barceloneta are best explored on foot; Plaça de Catalunya to the beach is about 30 minutes' walk.
- Bus — TMB buses fill gaps the Metro misses, such as Park Güell and the upper slopes of Montjuïc, and the Nitbus network runs overnight.
- Taxi — Black-and-yellow taxis are plentiful and metered, with supplements for airport trips and late nights.
Late-night bites
- Patatas bravas — Tapas bars all over the city, especially in Gràcia and Poble-sec.
- Bomba — Old bars in Barceloneta, where the dish was created in the mid-20th century.
- Jamón ibérico — Specialist ham shops and the market counters of La Boqueria and Santa Caterina.
Staying safe at night
Barcelona is generally safe, but pickpocketing and bag snatching are common on La Rambla, on the Metro, at the beaches and around the Sagrada Família. Keep bags zipped and in front of you, and be wary of distraction tricks such as a stranger pointing out a stain on your clothes.
- Emergency number
- 112 (European emergency number)
Where to stay for nightlife
$$$ · Best for first-timers, couples, culture and nightlife
Barri Gòtic (Gothic Quarter)
The oldest part of the city grew over Roman Barcino, whose walls and temple columns still appear between later buildings. Narrow lanes lead to Barcelona Cathedral, the quiet Plaça de Sant Felip Neri and the arcaded Plaça Reial, and Liceu and Jaume I Metro stations put the rest of the city within reach. It is central and atmospheric but busy and noisy.
- Good
- Walk to most central sights; Atmospheric lanes and squares; Plenty of bars and restaurants
- Watch out
- Crowded and noisy, especially near La Rambla; Pickpockets target the busiest streets; Many small, dark rooms
- Nearby
- Barcelona Cathedral, Plaça Reial, La Rambla, Plaça de Sant Felip Neri
