Ways to get around
Metro
Four colour-coded metro lines run until about 1am, linking the airport, Baixa-Chiado, Rossio, Avenida da Liberdade and Parque das Nações.
Load the rechargeable transport card sold at stations with pay-as-you-go credit to pay less per ride than single tickets.
Tram
Historic trams such as routes 28 and 12 wind through the old quarters, while modern tram 15 runs along the river from Praça da Figueira to Belém. The Glória, Bica and Lavra funiculars climb the steepest hills.
Tickets bought on board cost much more than card fares.
Train
Suburban trains run from Rossio station to Sintra and from Cais do Sodré along the coast to Belém, Carcavelos, Estoril and Cascais.
Ferry
Commuter ferries cross the Tagus from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas and from Terreiro do Paço to the south bank, giving cheap river views of the city.
Ride-hailing
Ride-hailing apps are widely used and usually cheaper than taxis; licensed beige or black-and-green taxis can also be hailed or found at ranks.
Walking
Most central sights are within 30 minutes on foot, but the hills are steep and the polished stone pavements slippery, so plan routes downhill where possible.
Tickets and passes
Pay-as-you-go transport card
A rechargeable card bought at metro stations, loaded with credit that works on the metro, Carris buses and trams, funiculars and some ferries.
24-hour ticket
Unlimited travel for 24 hours on the metro and Carris buses, trams, funiculars and the Santa Justa Lift, with versions that add suburban trains.
Lisboa Card
Combines public transport, including trains to Sintra and Cascais, with entry to sights such as Jerónimos and Belém Tower for 24, 48 or 72 hours; worth it only for busy sightseeing days.
From the airport
Lisbon Airport (LIS) is only about 7 km from the centre. The red metro line runs from the terminal, with a change at Alameda or São Sebastião for the Baixa, in about 25–35 minutes. Taxis and ride-hailing cars reach the centre in about 15–25 minutes depending on traffic.
Do you need a car?
No. Driving and parking in central Lisbon are stressful, and trains cover Sintra and Cascais. A car is useful only for touring the Alentejo, the Arrábida coast or further afield.
