Quick answer

With a large student population, Innsbruck has a lively bar scene for its size, centred on the railway arches and the old town rather than big clubs. The main areas are Bögen, Altstadt and Marktgraben and Anichstraße.

Nightlife tips

  • Night buses run on weekend nights; check IVB's night network before heading out.
  • Après-ski in the ski areas starts mid-afternoon and is often over by early evening.

What to drink

  • Zirbenschnaps — A spirit flavoured with the cones of the Swiss stone pine (Zirbe), with a resinous, slightly sweet taste, often served as a digestif after a heavy meal.

Evenings through the year

Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 13°C (55°F).

Getting home late

  • Walking — Walking covers the old town, the Hofburg, the Hofgarten, the Inn riverside and the station; Wilten and Bergisel are about 20–25 minutes from the old town on foot.
  • Tram — Buy tickets from machines or the IVB app before boarding.
  • Bus — City buses serve districts such as Igls and Amras, and regional and ski buses reach the surrounding ski areas and valleys.

Late-night bites

  • Tiroler Speck — Brettljause platters in inns and huts, and to take away at the Markthalle and old-town delis.

Staying safe at night

Innsbruck is calm for visitors. The main risks are in the mountains: sudden weather changes, afternoon thunderstorms in summer and avalanche risk off-piste in winter. Stay on marked trails and slopes and check the forecast.

Its streets of 19th-century apartment blocks have local cafés, the Grassmayr bell foundry and, along the railway viaduct, the Bögen bars. Bergisel and the Stubaitalbahn tram line start here.
