Quick answer
Salzburg's nights centre on concerts, beer halls and wine bars rather than clubs. A few late bars line the riverbank and Rudolfskai below the old town, and the student crowd keeps some places busy into the early hours. The main areas are Rudolfskai and Kaigasse, Steingasse and Mülln.

What to drink
- Coffee-house coffee — Espresso with steamed milk and milk foam, served on a silver tray with a glass of water in Salzburg's traditional coffee houses, where lingering over newspapers is the point.
- Salzburg beer — The city has brewed for centuries: the Augustiner monastery brewery in Mülln pours its beer from wooden barrels, and Stiegl, the large local brewery, runs a brewery museum and restaurant.
Evenings through the year
Sunset and the overnight low decide how long the outdoor part of a night lasts. July has the warmest evenings, with lows around 14°C (57°F).
| Month | Sunset (15th) | Overnight low | Rainy days |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | About 16:42 | -4°C (25°F) | 11 |
| April | About 19:57 | 4°C (39°F) | 12 |
| July | About 21:03 | 14°C (57°F) | 15 |
| October | About 18:20 | 6°C (43°F) | 10 |
Getting home late
- Walking — The left-bank old town, the right bank, Mirabell Gardens and the fortress are all within 20 minutes on foot; footbridges such as the Makartsteg cross the Salzach.
- Bus — Buy tickets from machines or the transport app before boarding; they cost more from the driver.
Late-night bites
- Mozartkugel — The Fürst confectionery shops in the old town sell the original hand-made version; others are everywhere.
- Bosna — Street stands in the old town, including the small grill in a passageway off Getreidegasse.
Staying safe at night
Salzburg is generally low-risk for visitors. Watch for pickpockets in crowds on Getreidegasse and at the Christmas markets, and take care on wet cobbles and steep paths to the fortress.
- Emergency number
- 112 (European emergency number), 133 police, 144 ambulance
