Altstadt
The compact old town is a horseshoe of arcaded streets around Herzog-Friedrich-Straße, bounded by the Inn and the Hofburg. Houses date from the 15th and 16th centuries, with the Golden Roof, the Stadtturm and the Helblinghaus at the centre and the Hungerburg funicular a few minutes' walk away. Hotels are in historic buildings and the lanes are largely car-free.

Romantic day trips
- Hall in Tirol (About 10 minutes by train) — Hall has the largest preserved old town in North Tyrol, built on salt-mining wealth, and the Hasegg Mint where the silver Guldiner of 1486, a forerunner of the thaler, was struck.
- Seefeld in Tirol (About 35 minutes by train) — A high plateau resort at about 1,200 metres known for cross-country skiing in winter and gentle walks in summer, such as the loop around the Wildsee lake.
- Achensee (About 1–1.5 hours by train and bus) — Tyrol's largest lake is a deep, turquoise fjord-like basin surrounded by the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, with boats, lakeside walks and cable cars from Maurach.
For dinner
Share local specialities such as Tiroler Gröstl, Kaspressknödel and Speckknödel. Many huts are cash-only or prefer cash, so carry some euros when hiking.
