Where couples should stay

Old Town (Altstadt)

The car-free old town between the Kapellbrücke and the Musegg Wall is built around Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and Hirschenplatz, where façades are covered in frescoes. Hotels here are mostly small and historic, and you can walk to the Lion Monument, the Jesuit Church and the boat piers in under 15 minutes.

Good
Every central sight is a short walk away; Atmospheric squares and lanes; Riverside restaurants along Unter der Egg
Watch out
Rooms are small for the price; Busy with tour groups in summer
Nearby
Kapellbrücke, Weinmarkt, Spreuer Bridge, Musegg Wall

Romantic day trips

  • Rigi (About 1.5 hours by boat and cogwheel railway) — The 'Queen of the Mountains' stands between Lake Lucerne and Lake Zug, with a broad summit at Rigi Kulm and gentle walking trails between Rigi Kaltbad and Rigi Staffel.
  • Stanserhorn (About 40 minutes by train, funicular and cable car) — From the small town of Stans, a historic funicular and the CabriO, a cable car with an open-air upper deck, climb to a summit with a 360-degree view over ten lakes.
  • Bürgenstock (About 30 minutes by boat and funicular) — A resort ridge above the lake with the Felsenweg cliff path, which leads to the Hammetschwand Elevator, an exterior lift climbing 150-odd metres up the rock face to a viewpoint.

For dinner

Share local specialities such as Lucerne vol-au-vent, Alpine macaroni and Lake perch and whitefish. Many shops and some restaurants close on Sundays; the station shops stay open.
